Kindle Unlimited Book/Audiobook Review: The Bright Side of Going Dark

I’ve always been an avid reader, and it has taken many forms. I’ve gone from reading paperback books, to e-books, to audiobooks, and now recently – mixed e-book/audiobook hybrids. The service is called Kindle Unlimited and it combines with Audible to deliver a truly versatile experience. My first book with Kindle Unlimited was this one, The Bright Side of Going Dark by Kelly Harms.

As an English as a foreign language teacher, I often try to pick books that would be both entertaining and practical. I’d like to be able to discuss aspects of the books I read with my students. That’s one big reason why I started this book. The premise is that of a social media influencer who decides to “go dark,” meaning go off social media. Why she, the influencer, would do such a thing is one reason alone to read or listen to this story. No spoilers here!

Yet, the book touches upon some very critical issues surrounding the meteoric rise of social media. It speaks to our dependence on our phones. Also, the perception of those who remain “in the dark” and don’t participate in this revolution of technology. It provides a balanced view and a great platform for discourse on the topic.

I am highly satisfied with his book and I feel it would be a great read or listen for anybody, including some of my English students. I made a graphic review of the book for you and you can find it below.

Buy as an Audiobook or an E-Book?

Business and Self-Development books tend to have a single voice talent who reads the book aloud. Yet, with a book that’s meant more for entertainment, the voice acting and performance are even more critical. The Bright Side of Going Dark delivers a great voice performance by both narrators. It’s one of the reasons why I would recommend this on Audible. If you simply want an entertaining, storytelling experience, then Audible is right for you. And the audiobook on Audible is inexpensive so just buy it straight up. Save your Audible credits for more expensive purchases.

However, if you also enjoy being able to read, and want the flexibility of immersive reading, then I would go with this book on Kindle Unlimited. If you don’t know what that is, you can check it out and learn more about it on my post about immersive reading.

I would recommend the Kindle Unlimited option because of its flexibility. Additionally, if you’re a non-native English speaker and want to get into reading books in English, immersive reading is a great way to get started.

In addition to Kindle Unlimited, you can read more about my experiences with Audible and see all of my recommendations up-to-date by checking out my post: Great “Reads” – Audiobooks Collection.
